It is spring in Paris. In my bedroom with open windows, I can hear the birds singing. I’m lying on the flowered, quilted bedcover, and I dream…of the striped, romantic wallpaper on the walls of my bedroom, my vintage sofa covered with tiger eye fabric, and my little kitchen with the tiny table covered with a gingham tablecloth and the beautiful Parisian cement tiles on the floor. I can hear the bells of the church of Montmartre just at the end of the street. I can see the roofs of Paris, and even from very far away, I can admire the Eiffel Tower and some other beloved monuments. Wearing my green dress with butterflies, I dream about a spring in Paris…

AM loves HUE is an ode to color and a joyous departure from my typical printed collection. The fabrics provide quilters and sewists with fun and diverse stripes, color blocks, and large graphic-style prints that are fun to use as whole pieces or cut up in interesting ways. Especially useful for the quilter are the color block designs, which are set up like quarter-yard cuts and fat sixteenths! I also brought back a couple of favorite large-scale prints, Belonging and Cartwheels, which have slightly cheater aspects to them for patchwork and appliqué. AM loves HUE packs a punch and provides all of my go-to colors that will work beautifully with all of my collections.

My love for caffeine and gardening is showcased in my whimsical collection, Blossom Brew. A mix of prints is featured: modern toile, fashion-forward women, and colorful florals bursting out of coffee and tea cups. Using a blend of pencil and watercolor, I’ve created my own variety of flowers for playful floral and coffee/tea-inspired projects. When I went blind at fifteen, I danced through the adversity and darkness until I found the light. I walked, jogged, ran, and danced toward that bright light. When you create, you dance around thoughts, images, and dreams. My grandmother once told me she saw a quilt in the sky. I believe now she was dancing on the puffy white clouds in heaven! Dance is the hidden language of the soul. Don’t let people discourage you; just dance the bad vibes off! Dance rhymes with romance. Love is why we are here! Go quilters!

A friend once remarked sentiments to me that I’ve never forgotten as it surprised me at the time. He said, “I go to India regularly for peace and tranquility”. He, Steve Rigg, was an elderly English doctor who carried himself with a distinguished and yet calm casual air. He shared his stories, cooking, and music experiences from times spent in India. I discovered firsthand what he meant when I too ventured solo to India in 1998. I traveled to Rajasthan endeavoring to have my block-printed and painted fabric designs reproduced onto rolls of fabric. This has been a dream of mine since a young teenager. With just a backpack, I rolled up in a rickshaw to the gates of the Rajmahal Palace in Jaipur. I could only afford to stay one night. I was escorted to my breathtakingly beautiful room. With marble floors, soaring ceilings, carved timber bed furniture and side tables, white bedlinen, and parchment paper notepads, the ambiance was special. Superb quality, including gorgeous woven reed and bamboo blinds that draped the enormous timber framed glass windows looking out to a carved screen courtyard and beyond to expansive formal gardens. From my limited travel clothes, I dressed for dinner in a smoky blue and turquoise sarong I had brought from home. I wore the turquoise silk blouse which I had made the previous day in Udaipur. On my feet, I wore brown flat sandals crisscrossed high above my ankles. Filled with wonder and delight, I strolled through the expansive intricate carved wood passageways to the marble opulent dining room. I was placed at a candlelit table for two, white linen, high ceilings, and soft lighting. I ate my smooth curry while listening to the mystical sounds of a harp being played by three men sitting cross-legged on the marble floor. I felt the “Essence of India”. The feelings evoked from the journey, left my soul enchanted and my stay so memorable. I felt feverishly inspired to want to paint and design. A seed was planted in my mind and a wish to one day have a collection on rolls of fabric, inspired by an Indian palace.

My third collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics, Golden Touch, is inspired by an up-close look at nature. I tried to capture in my designs the meditative repetition and diverse variation that is found in the natural world. My hope is that Golden Touch makes you feel like you are looking under a microscope and discovering patterns of spirals, spheres, waves, and meanders. The colors in the Golden Touch collection are evocative of metal elements and organic materials. This collection is unique because I combined three different artistic techniques and mediums to create it. The fourteen designs are made from my original monotypes, hand-painted watercolors, and monotype collages. Monotypes are a one-of-a-kind printmaking practice. Monotypes are created by painting directly onto a plate and running the plate through a printing press. In my monotypes, I utilize the unique and unexpected textures of both natural and man-made objects such as vegetable wrappers, bubble wraps, leaves, or dried flowers in my work. I enjoy this printmaking process because it involves a sense of spontaneity and it always includes an element of surprise. The monotype collages were created by cutting up and combining various different monotypes. I can’t wait to see how you use Golden Touch in your next project and I encourage you to take a peek through the looking glass to see what you discover.

To make sure that our quilts are not only pretty but also carry messages of love and affection, I’ve created fabrics that can be used to carry these sentiments. I was interested in the language of flowers, which was once used by lovers to communicate their thoughts and emotions... The Victorian era was full of these delicate pictures and floral cards. The world of William Morris and Beatrix Potter were also ideal sources of inspiration for expressing the symbolism of the era: highly decorative compositions, animals serving as messengers, graceful hands expressing friendship, hope and benevolence. Isn’t this a wonderful way of communicating — through bouquets? So why not incorporate it into our quilts? You too can compose messages for those you love: for new babies, for visitors coming into your home, for friends going far away, and for cherished grandmothers... LINEAGE is the collection that arrived after spending a summer making lines and playing around with the question, ‘When does a line become a stripe?’ The patterns that resulted from those explorations became a diverse compilation of drawings and collages, reveling in the beauty of a line, whether it be simple or complex. Then, thinking about the infinite ways those individual lines could evolve into stripes. During the making of the collection, I came to appreciate that one line alone can’t be a good stripe. Stripes by their very nature are pieces gathered, like families, standing side by side, making and taking up space together in a community. This collection is also a promise fulfilled to my cousin Sarah, an amazing quilter and the ultimate lover of stripes. Years ago, she asked me to create a stripe pattern, and from that one ask LINEAGE was born. To Sarah and stripe lovers everywhere, this is for you.

The Deja Vu collections are designed to offer a new take on an old favorite. In an effort to preserve the original collection, I have recolored Tabby Road for a new group of quilters. For people who loved Tabby Road when it first debuted in 2012, I offer you a brand-new colorway and a new reworked print! The linchpin of the collection is "Disco Kitty," a pair of fantasy cats in stripes and polka dots. The collection is built around them. I have added a new version called "Club Kitty" scaled up and splattered with nighttime stars in the background. The supporting prints are back with the volume turned way up. I added a prism of colors to some of the original two and three-color prints to give them their own spotlight. I chose Tabby Road for this year's Deja Vu collection for two reasons. The first reason is that I loved this collection and I hope that other people do too. The second reason is to show some love to my cat people. Besties, an all-pets collection that shipped in 2023, largely focused on dogs with a teeny tiny cat print. I am hoping that this will balance the scales. The Deja Vu collections come with an audience that already loves and misses these fabrics but with enough twists and turns to make them fall in love all over again. It is also designed to serve quilters who are new to us and missed these fabrics the first time around. By breathing new life into these long out of print fabrics with brand new colors and some additional extras, I am preserving the original fabrics for the people who have collected them to not devalue their hard earned (or hoarded) collections. Tabby Road Deja Vu is eight pieces presented as one complete colorway for new fans and old friends.

For most of my past 48 fabric collections, I have used flowers as the setting pieces for my animal illustrations. I have used them to fi.ll in the gaps and frame my illustrations. They have always been a part of the drawing that I look forward to! It seemed to me that it was time to give these little backup dancers their time in the spotlight! I am always looking to surprise people who use my fabrics. In true "Tula'' fashion, flowers alone would not have been enough for me. Some of my favorite pieces from past collections have been the small geometric prints that rarely get the same attention as the large detailed illustrations. In "Untamed" I have combined these elements so that each geometric print is paired with a floral print that highlights the same shapes. A checkered petal peony on a checkered background has its own coordinating checkered print. A dahlia covered in polka dots has a small polka dot print to pair with it. A houndstooth acts as a latticework for a collection of dogwoods and pansies to grow up and through, paired with a multi-color traditional houndstooth pattern with a swath of neon running through it. For an added layer of depth, I have added pigmented neon to the petals and geometrics which give the prints a magical glowing quality! These prints would be great on their own or paired with a past or future collection. Don't forget to pair them with True Colors to appreciate the collection fully.
